How do you know me so well, youtube?

Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground – Hey Momma

It’s strange how randomly clicking on the ‘suggested videos’ on youtube can often lead to exactly what you want. From RX Bandits to Zechs Marquise followed by this melodic gem. The song is nothing like the heavier prog jams that led me to it and it’s charming bouncy slice of slowed down vaudeville instantly perked me up. Unashamedly twee it may be and certainly driving close to the outskirts of hipsterdom; ‘Hey Momma’ nevertheless has a sweet charm that warms the cockles for the autumnal evenings. It takes a little turn for the worse with a sudden switch to a distorted dub section, though finishes with a flourish as a perky trumpet solo sings over the pretty plink-plonk piano. It wouldn’t sound out of place on Panic At The Disco’s second album Pretty Odd (an unfathomably underrated album) and can be filed in the drawer marked ‘Songs-to-perk-up-even-the-grumpiest-mood’.
